WW1 Centenary Memorial

WW1 Centenary Memorial

In the Summer of 2014 Burlingham Memorial Solutions were commissioned to design eight commemoration memorials for a major UK Council who wished to commemorate the Centenary of World War One.

Each of the memorials were designed to be in keeping with the surroundings of the cemeteries they were to be situated in.

Using this as the basis of our brief, our team of Designers worked closely with our highly skilled Stonemasons and Artists to create the commemorative memorial pieces, providing a suitable and fitting tribute where the public could pay their respects.

Design options

Three of the eight memorials were a traditional, rustic edged granite boulder design to reflect their site location.

The design of each of the larger, more contemporary memorials incorporated three stones on a large granite base. Each stone depicted a relief blasted artistic scene paying tribute to the Army, Navy and Royal air Force personnel involved.

The artwork was further complimented by the addition of a symbolic, specially designed and hand etched poppy field design with the outline of a row of soldiers carved from granite providing a focal point at the centrepiece of the base.

Finally, each memorial included a carved, hand painted poppy design and a quotation from Laurence Binyon’s famous war poem ‘For the Fallen’ in a letter style which would compliment the sentiment of the memorial.
